FEAST October 2
LIFE Catholics believe that angels act as guardians. Based on strong support from Doctors of the Church, we accept that it could even be true that each individual soul has its own custodial angel. Descriptions like the ones in Genesis 16, Hosea 12, Psalm 33, and Acts 12 -- though they do not demonstrate a doctrine -- receive their complement in the Lord’s own words: “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:10 NRSV.
INTERCESSION Perhaps the greatest kind of protection and guidance all angels can give is taking our prayers to the Father’s heavenly throne. The angel Raphael reminded Tobit that it was Raphael himself “who brought and read the record of your prayer before the glory of the Lord” Tobit 12:12 NRSV
PATRONAGE Each person’s guardian angel is their own particular patron.
SCRIPTURE TO PONDER Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:9-12 NRSV
